3D OCR™ 
 A technology developed by Caere that uses grayscale 
information to correctly recognized scanned characters.
Active window
  The foremost window on the desktop; the window 
where the next action will take place. An active window's title bar is 
highlighted.
ADF 
See Automatic document feeder.
AnyFont™ 
 Unique OCR technology, developed by Caere Corporation, 
capable of recognizing most typed, proportional, and typeset fonts 
automatically.
AnyPage™
  A technology developed and licensed by Caere that 
improves the combined performance of grayscale scanners and 
OmniPage. While preserving the quality of grayscale images, AnyPage 
retains the format of scanned pages and improves the recognition of text 
printed on shaded backgrounds.
ASCII
  Acronym for American Standard Code for Information 
Interchange. A code in which the numbers from 0 to 127 stand for text 
characters. ASCII code is used for representing text inside a computer 
and for transmitting text between computers or between a computer 
and a peripheral device.
Automatic document feeder (ADF)
  A device that allows you to scan 
multiple pages without having to place each page in the scanner. Some 
ADFs are built into scanners; others are add-on products.
Back up
  To make a spare copy of a disk or of a file on a disk. Backing 
up your files and disks ensures that you won't lose information if the 
original is lost or damaged.
Bit-mapped image
  A collection of bits (dots) in memory that represent 
the scanned image. The display on the screen is a visible bit-mapped 
image.
