•   Choose a stable, even, flat and sufficiently large surface for setting up the hard drive 
enclosure.
 
•    Never move the hard drive enclosure with the hard drive installed in it while it is in 
use or while the magnetic discs of the hard drive continue to spin for a few seconds 
after it is switched off. Otherwise, data may be lost! In addition, the hard drive could 
be damaged if the write/read head touches the magnetic disc.
 
•   Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a 
warm one. The condensation that forms can destroy the product under certain cir-
cumstances. 
 
   Allow the product to reach room temperature before connecting it to the power sup-
ply and putting it into use. This may take several hours.
 
•   When  setting  up  the  product,  make  sure  that  the  cables  are  neither  kinked  nor 
pinched.
 
•    Handle the product with care; it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental 
falls, even from a low height. 
Installation of a 6.35 cm/2.5” IDE hard drive
1.  Remove both screws on the back side of the housing and extract the slide-in case.
2.  Set  the  hard  disk  to  “MASTER”  (see  instructions  for  the  hard  disk  or  drawing  below).  With  
6.35 cm/2.5” hard disks, no jumpers are inserted in this setting. This normally corresponds to the 
basic setting with new hard disks.
3.  Insert the hard drive correctly on the 44-pin terminal strip. Make sure not to misplace the hard 
disk by one pin for example, when inserting it. 
4.  Fasten the hard drive on the board by using two screws.
5.  Insert the hard drive with the board carefully into the casing and pay attention to correct orien-
tation.
6.  Fasten both screws that you have previously unfastened.
Connection
There are two different types of USB ports:
•   Low-power USB ports
   Can supply a maximum power of 100 mA, e.g. the USB port for a keyboard or the USB port for a 
USB hub without power unit. Such connections are not appropriate for operating the external 
hard drive!
•   High-power USB ports
   Can supply a maximum power of 500 mA, e.g. the USB port on the motherboard or the USB port 
on a USB hub with its own power unit.
 Please note:
 
 Since most 6.35 cm/2.5” hard drives require a current of approx. 1 A for start up, and 
approx. 500-700 mA for operation, a low power USB port is not suitable for supplying 
power to this enclosure! Furthermore, the control circuit board inside the hard drive 
enclosure also requires a certain current (approx. 100 mA).
 
 Therefore, even one single high power USB port does not supply enough current for 
starting/booting the hard drive. This can prevent the hard drive from starting or cause a 
low clicking noise.
 
 Some USB ports supply more than 500 mA, although this is not standard.
Therefore, the USB cable provided has two USB Type A connectors.
First connect both type A USB-plugs to two free USB ports on your computer (or to a USB hub with 
its own power unit).
Only after this should the mini-plug be connected to the hard drive enclosure.
Thus, the current of both USB ports is added (500 mA + 500 mA = 1 A) and the operation of the 
external hard drive is ensured.
   Many notebooks provide less than 500 mA per port at their USB ports. In this case, it 
may not be possible to operate the hard drive (hard drive doesn’t turn on, isn’t recog-
nized, or similar). In which case, an external USB hub with its own power supply unit 
should be used.
Driver installation
The drivers are integrated in the operating system. Simply connect the external hard disk casing 
with the built-in hard disk to your computer (first connect both USB plugs type A with two free USB 
ports of your computer, then plug the mini-plug into the jack of the hard disk casing), the device is 
automatically recognized and the required drivers are installed.

Intended use
A 6.35 cm/2.5” IDE hard drive can be installed in the enclosure. It can be operated via a USB2.0/
USB1.1 interface. Power is supplied via the USB.
