6-6  –  Printing on Various Media and Options
Set page margins in your applications to fit within the imageable areas. If you try to
print outside the imageable area, many applications issue a warning message, giving
you an opportunity to make changes; some applications, however, clip the image and
print the page.
Printing on Custom Sized Media
Always use the appropriate feed source for the size and type media you are using.
Follow the loading procedure in “Multipurpose Cassette” in chapter 1 and the
guidelines in “Media Sources” later in this chapter.
Set the custom page size through your application. Make sure paper size selections in
the page or document setup section agree with those in the Print dialog box to ensure
the page prints correctly. Also, make sure the printer’s media size dial is set to Others
before printing a custom size page.
Additional RAM may be required to print larger media when the files are complex,
large, or have heavy graphics. (See “Printer Memory Requirements” in chapter 7.)
If a virtual memory error occurs, there is not enough printer memory to process the
job. In this case, try adding more memory to your printer, printing at a lower
resolution, and using only printer resident fonts.
Setting the Media Size Dial
If the media size dial is set to a specific page size, you need to print that exact page
size. If you want to print a custom size, make sure the dial is set to Others; then any
page size can be used.
If a media size that is different from the dial setting is loaded in the printer, a
document will not print until the dial is reset to the correct size.
Media Types
Your printer supports plain, laser, FX EP Color, and MX Tracing paper. It also
supports envelope (No. 4), label, and transparency stocks with weights from 17 - 34 lb
bond (64 - 128 g/m
2
) depending on the cassette used. See “Media Sources” later in this
chapter about which media source to use with specific media types and weights. This
chapter also covers media source specifications to use with specific media types and
weights and specifics for printing on envelopes, transparencies, and labels.
Media used should meet the guidelines for selecting and storing media covered earlier
in this chapter. To save on media costs, test a sample of new media before buying in
quantity. Run a test print on plain paper to check layout and alignment before using
more expensive stock.
