Most Web browsers support mechanisms to enable users to view
documents that cannot be read natively by a Web browser.
Through helper applications and plug-ins, Web browsers can
leverage other applications to read foreign document types.
RealAudio files are one example of a file type that requires an
external helper application such as RealPlayer or other similar
application.
To identify a file type, the Web server reports to the Web browser
the document’s MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Exchange)
type. For example, the MIME type for RealAudio files is “audio/
x-pn-realaudio”.
For a Web browser to properly launch a file, it must be properly
configured for the MIME type.
