Enhancements
ƒ Support for LTO-4 Drive-based Encryption – With LTO-4 drive encryption
activated, the drive controls the encryption (as opposed to BlueScale Encryption
controlling encryption through the QIPs). This method of encryption is fully
supported by integrated BlueScale Key Management features.
To use drive-based encryption, set up a partition that contains only LTO-4 drives
(that is, no LTO-3 or LTO-2 drives). This encryption method only works with LTO-4
tapes. The drives do support read/write operations for LTO-3 tapes storing data that
has not been encrypted through the library, and support read operations for LTO-2
tapes storing data that has not been encrypted through the library.
Only one encryption key is allowed per LTO-4 tape. To use an LTO-4 tape
containing data that was encrypted with another key, you must first recycle the tape
using the Recycle Media option in BlueScale Encryption.
If a partition with LTO-4 drives is configured for encryption, the library can load
LTO-3 media; however, attempts to write to this media fail. However, the drives can
successfully read unencrypted data on the media.
Note:
You must perform encrypted backups and restores using the same
encryption method, because the unique features of each encryption type
do not work together. For example, if you encrypt a backup using an
LTO-4 drive, you can not restore that backup using BlueScale encryption.
ƒ LTO-4 Media Recycling – When using LTO-4 drives to encrypt data, you may
choose to recycle (that is, re-use) media that contains data that has been encrypted
either:
ƒ using a different key
ƒ using library-based encryption
To reuse the media, select the BlueScale Encryption Recycle Media option.
Otherwise, the drive cannot write to this tape.
ƒ Power Usage and Storage Density Metrics
ƒ The library’s LC/RLC can now display information on the amount of power used
by the library.
ƒ The library’s LC/RLC can now display information on the library’s storage
density.
Note:
Metrics for LTO-2 drives/partitions are not currently supported.
