Backing Up Your Company’s Information
Imagine you turn on your computer and nothing happens. Or
worse, you arrive at work to find that your computer has been
stolen. The most important thing you can do every week, if not
every day, is back up your company’s information.

While you can back up onto any media, including another hard
drive, we recommend you use either a tape backup or a CD
writer. Floppy disks, while cheap, are prone to failure. (A
backup on floppy disks is, however, better than no backup at
all.)

Recordable CDs
When you write data to a CD, your CD writer is physically
burning pits into a coloured dye. Hence the term, “burning a
CD.” You should store your CD at room temperature and away
from the sun to help protect the CD’s coating.

Debate continues about what type of media lasts the longest.
Generally, however, the quality of manufacture is much more
important than the coating or the dye colour. We recommend
you purchase CDs from a reputable manufacturer.

Rewritable CDs are not as reliable as regular recordable CDs.
You should store your backup in a safe place. Store some
backups at a different location, because fire or theft can destroy
both your computer and your backup.
