3.5 How to turn on the trace files of the IPS
Use the following procedure to turn on and download the IPS tracer (log).
1.
Close the IPS
2.
Create a new text document.txt file.
3.
Rename the file ‘dfe.traces‘. Delete the extension .txt.
4.
Open the file in Note Pad and add the text ‘DEBUG_0’.
5.
Save and close the file to the following location: C:\User\<loging>\AppData\Roam-
ing\HP\IPS\logs
6.
Reopen the IPS and verify the creation of a new log file in the location above. Name of the new file:
‘_dfe_traces.txt’.
7.
The “_dfe_traces.txt” is the IPS’s log file. If needed, this is the file to be sent to HP to investigate any
unexpected behavior of the IPS.
8.
The file needs to be monitored to ensure that it does not grow into a large text file that takes up com-
puter resources, this file should be deleted occasionally.
NOTE:
When creating a .txt file with Windows Vista, its adds automatically a .txt extension. Also, by
default, Vista hides the “known” extension. By default, the file created is dfe.traces.txt; there will be no
file .txt generated.
NOTE:
From IPS 4.1 the traces utility is turned on by default, with a maximum file size of 200k. The
location of the file is C:\Users\<login>\AppData\Roaming\HP\IPS, file: ips_<date_time>.log.
